A genuine Hoi An silk lantern starts with split bamboo, bent and tied by hand into ribs — no wire, no plastic frame. Silk or fine organza fabric is then stretched drum-tight over the frame and secured without a single machine stitch.
Because the frame is tied rather than glued rigid, it folds flat. That is the detail that separates a real Hoi An silk lantern from a paper party lantern — it survives a suitcase, and it survives years of use, not one evening.
