A useful rule of thumb borrowed from standard pendant-light practice: over a dining table, aim for a shade roughly a third to half the width of the tabletop, hung so the bottom sits 70–90 cm above the surface — high enough that no one is looking straight into the bulb from a seated position. Indoor pendant use is the standard case
Both fabrics are built for a shade that hangs indoors or under real cover — a lantern is not a sealed, weatherproof fixture. For a covered terrace or humid, semi-outdoor bar, glossy polyester tolerates the air better than silk. Can a Hoi An silk lantern actually be used as a pendant light or chandelier?
Yes — the bamboo frame and stretched fabric are structurally the same thing as a fabric pendant-light shade. It hangs from a ceiling hook or fitting the same way any pendant does, and takes a standard LED bulb. Many customers order these specifically to use as a dining or kitchen-island fixture rather than as a decorative or seasonal piece.
What size should I choose for a dining table or kitchen island?

A metal or glass pendant is heavier, perfectly uniform across a batch, and the shade is usually replaced as a whole unit. Neither is better outright — it depends what you are optimising for.
