Da Lat sells you pine forests, flower gardens and a night market thick with the smell of grilled corn — not lanterns. There is no lantern-weaving history up in these hills, and no stall at Da Lat night market specialises in silk and bamboo the way Hoi An does.
What Da Lat does have going for it is the look. Timber cafes, garden homestays, misty evenings on a covered porch — that setting suits a warm silk lantern better than almost anywhere else in the country. Order one from our workshop in Ho Chi Minh City and it reaches you in a day or two, ready to hang.
Sitting at roughly 1,500 metres above sea level, Da Lat runs noticeably cooler and drier than the coast or the southern lowlands — the altitude that earned it the well-known nickname 'the city of eternal spring.' That cooler, less humid air is actually kinder to silk than the tropical humidity found in Hoi An or along the beach coast further south, which matters if you plan on keeping a lantern hanging for months rather than a single trip.

The highlands around Da Lat built their reputation on flowers, coffee, and cool mountain air — not on lantern-making, which stayed a lowland and coastal craft, concentrated mainly around Hoi An. Da Lat night market near Xuan Huong Lake is genuinely worth an evening: warm clothes stalls, strawberry wine, roasted chestnuts, crowds bundled up against the cold. You might spot a decorative paper lantern or two hanging above a café for atmosphere. Da Lat's flower gardens, the Crazy House, and the pine-forested hills around Tuyen Lam Lake are the actual draws that fill most visitor itineraries here, alongside the strawberry farms and coffee plantations further out of town. None of them sell lanterns, but several sit close enough to a garden homestay that ordering one to arrive during your stay is a realistic plan rather than an afterthought.

Da Lat homestays lean hard into timber, exposed beams and small gardens — a look that photographs beautifully and that a plain LED bulb does nothing for.
